BMW i Vision Dee, new concept with advanced head-up display at CES 2023 January 05, 2023 22

bmw announced that it will unveil a new concept based on the upcoming Neue Klasse platform at CES 2023. At the Las Vegas show, the German automaker unveiled on BMW i Vision Di. This is a special concept car, born to represent the vision of the manufacturer future digital experienceboth inside and outside the vehicle.

So with BMW i Vision Dee (“Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience), the brand wants to explore future vehicle digitization scenarios by showing off some of the technologies that will appear on its future series vehicles. Oliver ZipseCEO of BMW, about this car said:

With the BMW i Vision Dee, we show what is possible when combining hardware and software. In this way, we can use the full potential of digitization to turn the car into an intelligent companion. This is the future for car manufacturers and also for BMW: combining a virtual experience with real driving pleasure. At the same time, the BMW i Vision Dee is another step towards NEUE KLASSE. With this vision, we look to the future and emphasize the vital importance of digitization for our next generations of products.

A NEW LEVEL OF DIGITAL EXPERIENCE

For BMW, future digital features will go far beyond the voice control and driver assistance systems we know today. What the manufacturer calls “new digital experience“, already starts outside. In fact, the concept, as the driver approaches, performs a series of welcome animation.

Indeed, it can also project an imagedriver’s avatar on the side window to further customize the welcome script. Voice commands can already be used externally. In addition, the headlights and grille can be used to communicate with outside people through special animations.

The concept for the exterior takes Electronic ink technology already seen in the e-ink BMW iX Flow concept unveiled at CES 2022. BMW says that the body is covered with a special film equipped with this technology, which allows change color car on command (up to 32 colors).

Turning to the interiors, the concept has, above all, extended head-up display which projects images and driving information onto the entire windshield. Using “BMW Mixed Reality Slider”, a touch control located in the center of the dashboard, allows you to select the amount of digital content you want to see on the head-up display (5 levels available).

Selection ranges from analog to driving information, to the content of the communication system, to projections in augmented reality, up to the entrance to “virtual worlds”. The most interesting aspect is that the German brand is announcing that starting in 2025, models based on the new Neue Klasse platform will use the standard version of the Head-Up-Display, which extends the entire width of the windshield.

In addition to the head-up display, the interior is characterized by a minimalist style and the use of environmentally friendly materials. There is also a steering wheel with large tactile surfaces. According to BMW, these digital touch points control the choice of content projected onto the windshield and, together with the head-up display, ensure safe driving:hands on the wheel, eyes on the road“.

So at CES 2023, BMW is showing off a small preview of some of the most advanced technology we’ll find in its upcoming models.
