Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV, Wankel engine is back, autonomy has been increased January 13, 2023 36

Mazda introduced the electric MX-30 in 2020. Now the Japanese automaker is debuting a new version MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. The manufacturer defines this model as “Plug-in hybrid”, but in fact it is an electric car equipped with a gasoline range extender. The peculiarity is that it Wankel engine.

ENGINE AND POWER

So at the Brussels Motor Show, Mazda lifted the veil on this model, marking the return of the rotary engine, which in this case is used to power the battery and, if necessary, electric propulsion. Electric models equipped with a petrol range extender are rare, but this solution overcomes the range limits of electric vehicles. Therefore, Mazda chose to offer a car with a small battery and extended range rather than offer the MX-30 with a large capacity battery and much heavier (and more expensive) range.

In general, the automaker talks about autonomy thanks to the range extender, over 600 km (Mazda estimate).

Our unique lightweight rotary engine is used as a power generator to recharge the battery when needed, allowing you to keep going for more than 600 km.

In more detail, the power unit consists of 125 kW (170 hp) electric motor with a torque of 260 Nm. Max Speed is 140 km/h, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 9.1 seconds. The device is powered primarily by one Battery 17.8 kWh (35.5 kWh battery 100% electric variant already on the market), which allows electric-only range up to 85 km on the WLTP cycle (110 km in the city). Consumption is 17.5 kWh per 100 km (WLTP). Battery that can be charged with DC up to 36 kW and AC up to 11 kW.

To increase range, a new 830cc Wankel engine is also used as a generator and is capable of delivering 55kW (74hp) at 116Nm of torque. This unit can count on a 50-liter gas tank. The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is equipped with three driving modes: normal, electric car and recharge.

In the first mode, the car uses only the battery. If more power is required than the battery can provide, such as during acceleration, the rotary motor generator is activated depending on the degree of throttle opening. On the other hand, in EV mode, only electric drive will be used until the instrument cluster indicates that the battery is completely discharged. However, in situations where the driver suddenly needs to accelerate and deliberately depresses the accelerator pedal beyond a certain point (kickdown), the rotary engine generator is activated and generates energy to accelerate to the maximum possible power.

Finally, in reboot mode, you can save the required amount of energy in the battery. Mazda explains that users have the option to set the amount of battery life they want to maintain in 10% increments. The generator is activated when the battery charge drops below the set reserve level and recharges the battery to the set level. Once the battery charge exceeds the selected level, the vehicle will operate normally until the battery level drops below the specified level. It will then use the rotary engine generator to bring the battery back up to that level.

Consumption is 1 l/100 km with emissions of 21 g/km CO2 (WLTP). Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV supports V2L technology (car-loading) for powering external electrical appliances with a power of up to 1.5 kW.

EQUIPMENT AND PRICES

The new Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is available in Prime Line, Exclusive Line and Makoto trim levels with list prices between 38 150 euros Prime Line and 41 400 euros Makoto version. In addition, they are provided two special versions Advantage and Edition R which are characterized by some exclusive standard equipment and list prices respectively 39 650 euros And 45 650 euros.

Delivery to dealerships is expected in the summer. To launch this new model, Mazda Italia has decided to offer a special initiative running from 13 January to 31 March. All those who buy this model during the specified period will actually be able to access the welcome bonus, which includes:

  • up to 8,500 euros benefits, including through state benefits in case of state disposal
  • purchase under the Get & Drive Smart formula, including 2 years theft and fire insurance, which provides only an advance payment, without payment of installments or interest over the next 2 years: at the end of this period, the client can decide to keep, return or replacement of the car with the certainty that it will be known immediately what its value will be at the end of the contract
