Scientists have found a new way to generate electricity: how does this “generator” work?

“Twistron” is the name of a new type of yarn developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas. This yarn can generate electricity when stretched or twisted.

This is not entirely new, it is an improved invention. The technology for generating electricity from the mechanical action of a person while wearing clothes was developed in 2017, but later researchers achieved an efficiency of only 7.6% when twisting and unfolding a special fabric.

Now, the method has been improved as scientists focus on weaving three separate strands of twisted carbon nanotubes to form a single thread. The researchers then tested the new filaments in experiments and found that the energy conversion efficiency increased to 17.4% when stretched and 22.4% when bent.

Texas scientists say their technology could be used to collect and analyze data about human movement (like sports or exercise). And although it is not possible to charge a power bank or a smartphone with the help of nanofabrics, it is quite possible to power small wearable sensors or miniature devices.
