Discovered 8 strange signals from space of unknown origin: possible extraterrestrial intelligence

Scientists using artificial intelligence have detected thousands of signals from space, but only a few of them have been sent by aliens.

ScienceAlert writes that the artificial intelligence created by scientists can detect more than 20,000 different signals coming to Earth from space, and 8 of these signals may be related to extraterrestrial civilizations.

Today, artificial intelligence is an important component of scientific research. This also applies to the search for extraterrestrial civilizations, or rather signals from potential extraterrestrial intelligence.

According to Danny Price of Curtin University in Australia, he and his colleagues have been looking for evidence of intelligent life outside the solar system for several years. The scientists created an artificial intelligence where they wrote a special algorithm that helps determine which signals are techno-signatures (i.e. artificially generated signals from possible aliens) and which are ordinary radio interference.

“Our AI was trained to look for signals in radio telescope data that couldn’t be generated by natural astrophysical processes. When we gave our AI a previously studied dataset, it found 8 interesting signals from space,” says Price.

According to the scientist, it is too early to fully rely on artificial intelligence in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, because artificial intelligence has not yet been trained to think and therefore acts according to a certain algorithm. However, recent developments show that artificial intelligence can still help search for potential aliens.

“With the help of radio telescopes, we’re looking for techno-signed signals that can indicate that there may be other intelligent species out there. Most importantly, our AI will work better than other similar systems, and that’s very important for further research,” says Price.

But in the process of searching for technical signatures, scientists are faced with the fact that radio telescopes actually receive signals of terrestrial origin, which are radio interference. Therefore, AI helps to understand their classification. The new AI was able to isolate more than 20,000 interesting signals from outer space, 8 of which could be aliens’ techno signatures.

“We’ve checked this data and we’re increasingly leaning towards the possibility that these signals are terrestrial. But it’s a good start,” Price says.

According to scientists, if they can still detect a signal that is certain to come from space, it will be one of the biggest discoveries in science.

“Even if we haven’t found anything yet, and we won’t be able to pick up such a signal in the near future, that doesn’t mean humans are the only technologically advanced species in our galaxy. Maybe we’re looking for false signals, or maybe our radio telescopes aren’t that sensitive to picking up such signals yet. Maybe new technologies it will really allow us to capture an alien signal and prove that we are not alone in this universe. On the other hand, it is worth thinking, what if we are alone?” says Price.

Focus He has already written that scientists have discovered 25 new signals from space and continue to repeat themselves. These signals are mysterious fast radio bursts, and some scientists believe that aliens can communicate with each other this way.

same Focus He wrote that scientists explained the lack of signals from extraterrestrial civilizations as the right moment had yet to come. Scientists believe that communication between earthlings and aliens is possible when our planets pass through the background of their stars.
