It’s not a secret that Volvo has an ambitious electrification plan that will see it become an all-electric brand by 2030. To achieve this goal, the automaker will need to launch in the next few years several new battery models which will replace the endothermic ones.
According to Reuters, the Swedish brand intends to bring to market 6 new battery models by 2026. These will be 3 SUVs, 2 sedans and a minivan for the Asian market. The manufacturer’s idea was to offer an electric version of all existing endothermic models.
We already know the first model of Volvo’s new electric range. This is the Volvo EX90 SUV (the “electric successor” of the XC90), introduced at the end of November 2022 and on the market by the end of 2023. The report then talks about an electric version of the XC40, which, however, already exists. In fact, this is likely a reference to the EX30, an SUV due in 2023 that will be positioned directly below the XC40. There will also be a battery-powered version of the XC60, which Volvo previously confirmed. In addition, according to the report, a battery-powered variant of the S60 and S90 sedans is also planned to be offered.
As for the electric minivan for the Asian market (especially China), we have already talked about it earlier. It should be a model based on the Zeekr 009. Recall that both Volvo and Zeekr are part of the Geely Group. If this is true, then it will be based on the Geely SEA platform and will be able to count on a dual electric motor capable of delivering a total of 400 kW. Even if the technical basis of both models is the same, a Volvo car can count on a design that matches its stylistic identity. Therefore, this should not be a simple rebranding of Zeekr 009.
As of now, no comments have been received from Volvo and Geely on this report. However, it seems clear that Volvo is working on several battery-powered models that will serve its goal of becoming an all-electric brand.
