polar Star will be able to use LiDAR technology from Luminar Technologies even in its upcoming models such as the Polestar 5. In fact, the carmaker has announced that it has expanded a collaboration agreement with the American company to continue integrating this technology into its electric vehicles.
As a reminder, Luminar’s LiDAR is already available on the new Polestar 3 electric SUV by choosing an optional package that also includes additional cameras. A package that allows the electric SUV to have advanced driving assistance features that will be expanded and improved over time thanks to the arrival OTA updates.
Before the launch of the Polestar 3, the brand repeatedly highlighted the potential of the off-road driving assistance system made possible by the technology developed by Luminar. These sensors emit millions of laser pulses locate objects with extreme precision by scanning the environment to create a map in real time which is then used by driver assistance systems.
The expanded collaboration thus lays the foundation for a collaboration that will cover industrial design and the integration of Luminar 3D laser scanning technology into all new Polestar vehicles. Thus, after the Polestar 3, the manufacturer confirmed that the Polestar 5, an electric 4-door GT developed from the Polestar Precept concept car, will also be able to rely on Lumnar’s LiDAR. Even if it is not specified, it is likely that the Polestar 4 arriving in 2023 will also have this technical solution.
Coinciding with the announcement of the new partnership, Polestar added that it expects the Polestar 3 to be sold with an optional package that integrates LiDAR into the vehicle. Thus, interested customers will be able to order an SUV equipped with this technical solution even today, even if the waiting time for receiving the car is short.
Really, first deliveries Polestar 3 with LiDAR is expected in late 2024/early 2025. Order shipments for the non-LiDAR Polestar 3, open on World Premiere Day, October 12, 2022, are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2023.
