How to permanently lower high blood pressure: the answer is hidden on your plate

Researchers have named a diet that can effectively reduce and maintain high blood pressure.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a serious pathological condition that significantly increases the risk of developing diseases of the cardiovascular system, kidneys and even the brain. But it looks like researchers have found an effective way to combat hypertension, writes the PSY Blog.

In a new study, scientists at Warwick School of Medicine looked at seven plant-based diets:

  • Mediterrenian;
  • SPEED;
  • vegetarian;
  • high fiber;
  • vegan;
  • high in fruits and vegetables;
  • Scandinavian.

The researchers focused on examining which regimen could effectively lower blood pressure. The results of the study show that even less restrictive plant-based diets with small amounts of animal products can quite cope with this task.

During the study, the researchers compared the impact on human health of strict plant-based diets as well as those containing small amounts of animal products such as meat and dairy products. The results show that even less restrictive diets can effectively lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

It should be noted that high blood pressure is one of the most important risk factors for the development of cardiovascular diseases, and therefore its lowering will have a significant positive effect on human health.

Researchers insist that the global rate of death and disease from malnutrition is actually much higher than binge drinking, smoking, unsafe sex and drug use combined.

Previous research shows that around 5 million deaths each year could be prevented if people switched to a plant-based diet rich in:

  • whole grains;
  • Hazelnut;
  • fruits;
  • vegetables;
  • seeds.

According to the study’s first author, Joshua Gibbs, he and his colleagues reviewed more than four dozen studies involving nearly 8.5 thousand people. All aimed to examine the effect of seven different plant-based diets on blood pressure.

The scientists applied a systematic review and mathematical analysis and found that many of these diets were actually ways to effectively lower blood pressure. For example, the DASH diet showed the greatest effect: a 5.53/3.79 mmHg reduction in blood pressure. compared to the control diet and 8.74/6.05 mm Hg. compared to a “normal” diet.

What’s more, the researchers found that even diets low in animal products had an effect:

  • reduces the risk of stroke by 14%;
  • reduces the risk of heart attack by 19%;
  • reduces overall mortality by 7%.

The researchers note that these results are important because they show that it is not necessary to exclude all animal products from the diet to lower high blood pressure – it is enough to limit their consumption and increase the proportion of plant foods in the diet.
