The US Navy plans to launch a new Overmatch project aimed at simplifying and making fleet management more efficient. The system is still in the early stages of development, but according to Rear Admiral Fred Pyle it will be implemented in 2-3 years. The military added that the value of an integrated combat system lies in its superior decision-making ability at “computer speed.” The business rationale is that the Navy is acquiring new capabilities through software rather than installing expensive hardware.

“A decision-making officer on a ship or in an assault group at a naval operations center will be able to “connect” any sensor to any shooter, and that’s pretty powerful,” he told reporters.

Brian Clark, naval operations specialist at the Hudson Institute think tank, recently told Defense News that the Overmatch project involves “developing command and control tools for commanders so they can use their existing communications to develop and adjust their plans of action, and then execute them.” A scale and speed that the enemy does not expect.” Clarke added that not all vehicles are AI-powered, but are equipped with machine learning to help develop the most effective scenarios. The US Department of Defense has already invested in decision-making tools. For example, the Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency has created an artificial intelligence program to help win air battles.

Clark said that as the Overmatch project matures, the Navy is likely to increase its investment in decision-making and ship-to-ship communications technology. According to Pyle, the ships that are part of the battle group exchange information, but not as fast as we would like. By linking combat systems, each ship will be able to see what the others see, and decision-making tools will help the military determine “the best option for battle with the highest probability of success available”.
