This smart necklace will help you quit smoking

Quitting smoking can be a very difficult mission. that it may prevent smokers from regaining their health; however now technology can help achieve this.

Researchers at Northwestern Medicine have developed smart device worn around the neck and resembles a blue lapis lazuli pendant

this is a new necklace determines the user’s smoking habit much more reliable than previous systems. He does this by taking thermal signatures from thermal sensors.

According to its creators, a necklace called SmokeMoncompletely preserves the privacy of the smoker, since just keep track of the heatnot images, which are the deciding factor for people to feel comfortable in it.

“This goes way beyond the number of cigarettes a person smokes per day.”says Nabil Alshurafa, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. “We can determine when a cigarette is litwhen a person brings it to his mouth and takes a puff, how much he inhales, how much time passes between puffs and how long the cigarette is in his mouth.

The data collected by the device is called the smoker’s topography, which is important for two reasons. First, it allows scientists measure and evaluate the harmful effects of carbon monoxide among smokers and gain a better understanding of the relationship between chemical exposure and tobacco-related illness.

The second reason help people in their quest to quit smokingr, understanding how smoking topography is related to relapse (return to regular smoking) that often occurs in people who quit smoking.

How does the device help?

In fact, SmokeMon suggests preventing or avoiding relapses in smokers or ex-smokers. who seek to abandon this dangerous vice, to which more than 8 million deaths in the world are attributed annually.

The information collected by the device may be used to predict when a person will relapse and when to intervene with a phone call for example, from a health coach or even a text or video message via smartphone to help prevent relapse.

“We want catch them before they fall completely from the van,” says Alshurafa. “Once they do, it will be much harder for them to quit smoking again.

While smokers wore the device, scientists trained a machine model based on deep learning to detect smoking incidents along with your smoking topography, including parameters such as puff time, number of puffs, puff duration, puff volume, puff interval, and smoking duration.

Tobacco smoking will be banned on beaches and public parks in Miami Beach from January.
