On par with Javelin and Himars: how do drones help repel Russian attacks near Ugledar?

Drones allow the Ukrainian army to spot and shoot the invaders even on the outskirts of the city.

The Ukrainian army repelled the offensive of the Russian army near Vuhledar in the Donetsk region. British tabloid The Guardian has learned how drones are helping defenders.

A few kilometers from the front line, the 68th Jaeger Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine equipped a high-tech command post in the basement of a private plot, heated by a traditional stove. The Ukrainian military sits at laptops or stares at large monitors, studying videos from drone cameras and radio communications from Russian military personnel.

The senior lieutenant of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the call sign “Tikhy” compared the front UAV to a “magic wand”, which helps with everything from reconnaissance to correcting artillery fire. It is crucial that the Ukrainians detect the enemy forces before they approach the nearly destroyed mining town of Vuhledar and destroy them from afar.

Aerial drone footage shows that the Russians in the 155th Marine Brigade, made up entirely of newly mobilized soldiers, are poorly trained. Newcomers to the battlefield often gather in groups, making them easy targets for the APU. However, Russian equipment is not destroyed by drones as much as Javelin anti-tank missile systems and HIMARS high-precision multiple launch rocket systems.

SpaceX recently announced that it is limiting Starlink’s use for the Armed Forces precisely because satellite Internet is used to control drones on the battlefield. “Quiet” says it hasn’t noticed any changes yet and the service is running under Ugledar. Ukrainian Lieutenant Colonel Pavel Khazan has suggested that Elon Musk’s company has decided to limit Starlink’s work to attacking UAVs and not reconnaissance, but it is unknown whether the software will be able to distinguish between the two types of UAVs.

On February 13, American astronaut Scott Kelly asked Elon Musk to return access to Starlink to the UAF. The billionaire said that Ukrainians continue to use SpaceX satellite internet, including on the front lines, but the company is trying to prevent the conflict from escalating in a way that could escalate into World War III.

On February 15, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense reported that the invaders raided Ugledar and Bakhmut, trying to prevent the counterattack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to the representative of the department Andrei Yusov, the effectiveness of the RF Armed Forces has decreased significantly compared to 2022, but they still throw a large number of forces into battle.
