Haaretz sources say that the Israeli government has not yet provided the air defense systems, but Kiev still relies on them.
Israel will help Ukraine develop an early warning system for the approach of missiles and drones. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen expressed this at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmitry Kuleba, in Kiev on February 16.
According to the minister, Israeli experts will help the Ukrainians create their own “intelligent” system that will help detect enemy missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles to hit. Thus, Israel will provide real support to Ukraine during the war. In his speech, Dmitry Kuleba emphasized that Israeli partners are aware of the Ukrainian need for technologies to protect the sky.
On the same day, Eli Cohen met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and promised to deliver Israel’s air threat warning system to citizens within three to six months, according to Israeli publication Haaretz. In addition, Iran’s “destructive actions in Ukraine” and Israel-Ukraine cooperation against Tehran’s terrorist activities in the international arena were discussed.
Israel uses its own missile warning system called “Tseva adom” (“Red”). It uses radar and optical sensors to detect approaching air threats, determining their size and degree of danger. After that, the data is displayed on an electronic map, and sirens sound in cities located in the affected area. In addition, a special application sends a threat notification to Israelis – users only have a few minutes to hide in bunkers.
In October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine sent Israel a detailed list of air defense systems that Ukraine wants to buy. The Magen Or (Light Shield) complexes included Barak-8 and Patriot missiles, Iron Dome, David Sling, Patriot, Arrow and Iron Beam systems.
According to a Haaretz source, although Israel has not yet delivered its defense systems, Ukraine is still waiting for them. The same goes for the air threat warning system promised to Ukraine by former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
In early February, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was considering the delivery of the Iron Dome air defense system to Ukraine. He stressed that Israel is against Iran, which supplies drones to the Russian Federation, but that they do not want to have a direct confrontation with Moscow due to the events in Syria.
