Software development it is becoming more and more important to the automotive world and car manufacturers are working to implement it increasingly sophisticated infotainment systems. With the increasing digitalization of vehicles, Audi is preparing to introduce a very important novelty. Indeed, the 4-ring company has announced that it is integrating its own app store into the infotainment system of some of its models.
The technical requirement for this innovation is in the update of the infotainment system MIB 3 via an additional electronic component: an Audi hardware module the size of a USB stick, loaded with an open source operating system, allows access to third-party applications in the vehicle.
With this innovation, customers will have access to a wide range of applications downloaded directly to MMI, regardless of the use of a smartphone. At the moment, applications are available in the following categories: music, video, games, navigation, parking, charging, weather and news. The music section, for example, includes apps like Amazon Music and Spotify. The store will be constantly expanded by adding new applications.
Customers can access the app store through a dedicated infotainment screen. After selecting the desired application, it is integrated into the infotainment system and can be used. The new app store will be available in Europe for select models equipped with the latest MIB 3 infotainment platform, such as the Audi A4 and Audi A5, Audi Q5, Audi A6 and Audi A7 Sportback, Audi A8, Audi Q8 e- tron and Audi e -tron GT, which will be extended to additional vehicles during 2023.
The novelty will be available from from next summer. Oliver HoffmannAudi Board Member for Technical Development commented:
