With four new astronauts as backup crews for the ISS, the Crew Dragon spacecraft sent a Falcon 9 rocket into space from SpaceX on Thursday, March 2. After 25 hours of flight, the spacecraft docked with the orbital station on Friday morning, March 3. The fact of successful docking was confirmed the moment the ISS flew at 28,164 km/h at an altitude of 420 km above Earth.

The mission, dubbed Crew-6, is NASA’s sixth astronaut mission since Elon Musk’s company performed the first such flight in spacecraft in May 2020. Crew Dragon included NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg, UAE astronaut Sultan Al-Neyadi, and Russian Andrey Fedyaev.

As already written FocusInitially this crew’s departure to the ISS was scheduled for Monday, February 27, but due to problems with the rocket and then worsening weather conditions, the launch date was delayed to Thursday, March 2.

But this flight was not without some difficulties. Docking of the spacecraft to the ISS took place at 08:20 Kiev time, but the crew was ready to cross the threshold of the station an hour earlier. Mission controllers on Earth stopped the spacecraft for a while due to problems detected in one of the clamps in which the spacecraft was “held” to the ISS. Once the ground crew restarted the ship’s software, the issue was resolved and Crew Dragon successfully docked. According to SpaceX representatives, they did not expect the ship to experience such problems in space.

The four new astronauts on the ISS will be here for about six months and will conduct more than 200 important experiments. Some of this research will aid the application of manned flights to the moon and other planets. Of course, the new crew members will keep the International Space Station operational.

Stephen Bowen, 59, the most experienced of the four astronauts, has been in space three times and spent a total of 40 days there. He also has 7 spacewalks on his track record. The other three have been outside our planet for the first time.

It is important to note that Russian Andrey Fedyaev is already the second astronaut to fly into space from the Russian Federation in an American spacecraft, thanks to a new agreement signed between NASA and Roscosmos last July. Despite the deterioration of relations between the United States and Russia due to the occupation of Ukraine, cooperation between the countries on the ISS continues.

By the way, today there are four representatives of the Russian Federation at once at the orbital station, including Fedyaev. The fact is that Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin remained at the station for another six months. They and the American Frank Rubio were unable to fly home due to an accident on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft. But as previously written Focus“Roskosmos” has launched a new spacecraft, but will only be able to bring the trio back to Earth in September.

Another Russian woman, Anna Kikina, will return to Earth in about five days, along with Americans Josh Kassada and Nicole Mann, and Japanese Koichi Wakata. The most interesting thing is that the representative of the Russian Federation will fly on the ship of the American company SpaceX. In fact, this quad will replace the crew that came into orbit on Friday, March 3.

Moreover Focus He wrote that astronaut Josh Kassada took a wonderful photo of the aurora from space.
