An interesting pair of gas giants has been discovered orbiting a star so similar to the Sun that it could be a twin.

A star named HIP 104045 lies 175 light-years away and is very similar in chemical composition to our Sun. This star is slightly younger as it is 4.5 billion years old, while the Sun is 4.57 billion years old. HIP 104045 is only 1.03 times the mass of the Sun and only 1.05 times its size. In addition, this star emits 1.11 times more light.

Examination of this star using ground-based telescopes revealed two large planets orbiting it. And it turned out to have significant similarities with Jupiter and Neptune.

  • An exoplanet similar to Jupiter is only 0.5 times larger in mass than our gas giant and makes a full rotation around its star in 6.3 years. In this case, the planet is about the same distance from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun.
  • The second Neptune-like planet has a mass 2.5 times the mass of our gas giant and makes a full rotation around the star in 316 days, meaning it is much closer to the Sun than Neptune.

Scientists are still hoping to find a rocky, Earth-like world that could orbit a star here in what’s called the habitable zone. That is, in a region of space where there could be good conditions for the existence of water in liquid form, and therefore life.

Given that in the solar system Jupiter played the role of “protecting” the inner planets from many space rocks, it could also have gravity directed asteroids towards Earth at the beginning of our system’s history. , which can bring the building blocks of life here.

If a planet like Jupiter is co-located with our gas giant, this could potentially mean that this exoplanet could play the same role in its system. According to the theory, an Earth-like rocky world could coexist with a similar gas giant in such a system, according to the theory. However, there are a few problems.

  • First, the presence of a gas giant like Neptune at such close proximity to the star may indicate that no small rocky worlds are present here.
  • Second, scientists still haven’t detected a third planet other than the two above.
