Volkswagen Group and Umicore give green light to cathode and precursor joint venture March 24, 2023 0

New breakthrough Volkswagen Group its ambitious plan for electrification, in particular with regard to the production of batteries at its future new plants. Really, PowerCoa German group company specialized in battery business, e Humicor they got the go-ahead for a joint venture that was announced last year. The new company will be engaged in large-scale industrial production cathode active materials and precursors in Europe.

JOINT VENTURE

In particular, the Volkswagen Group recalls the importance of active cathode materials for the operation of battery cells. These elements also have a very important impact on the overall cost of batteries. It is for this reason that these materials are of strategic importance to the German Group, playing a central role in the creation of battery value and crucial to the success of the transition to electric mobility.

Starting from 2025is a new joint venture headquartered in Brussels, will supply batteries to European factories under the control of PowerCo, the main materials for production, which will cover most of the demand for active cathode materials and precursors. By the end of the decade, the new company plans to produce active cathode and precursor materials for an electrolyzer capacity equal to up to 160 GWh per yearwhich is equivalent to an annual production capacity capable of powering approximately 2.2 million 100% electric vehicles.

The search for a site for the construction of the production site of the joint venture continues. Through the activities of Umicore, the Belgian closed loop technology group will gain access to an important part of the market for cathode materials for electric vehicles in the European Union.
