Huge reserves of water were found on the Moon: it always lay on the surface, literally

Chinese scientists believe that water is stored in small reservoirs on the surface of the Earth satellite.

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted another study on samples of lunar soil that were delivered to Earth at the end of 2020 by the China Chang’e-5 spacecraft. The results of a new study show that water in the lunar soil is hidden in tiny glass balls. And ScienceAlert writes that this water on the moon’s surface could be about 300 billion tons.

Studies of lunar soil samples sent by the Chang’e-5 spacecraft have been ongoing for several years. And scientists continue to make more and more new discoveries.

A new analysis of the lunar soil has shown that enormous amounts of water can be stored on the moon’s surface in tiny glass balls. They occur when space rocks crash into the Moon’s surface, when the rock cools and glassy particles only a few tens or hundreds of micrometers in size are produced.

Recent research suggests that the presence of large amounts of water on the Moon is due to the solar wind. When solar particles hit the moon, the hydrogen ions combine with the oxygen already in the lunar soil.

Chinese scientists believe that these water tanks made of glass beads may play an important role in the water cycle on the Moon. While some of the water escapes into space, most of it is stored in these tiny particles.

According to scientists, each glass ball can contain up to 0.002 grams of water per gram mass of this particle. Scientists suggest that there may be several hundred billion tons of water on the Moon. And this water accumulates in such balls only a few years.

This is an extremely important discovery, especially in light of the fact that in the near future it is planned to build the first lunar base, followed by the creation of a larger colony on the Earth satellite. So the first astronauts to go to the Moon will be able to extract water from the surface, which will make their stay here for a long time more comfortable.

In addition, scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences suggest that water can similarly accumulate on the surface in bodies that do not have atmospheres in our solar system, such as the Moon.

As already written FocusContrary to scientists’ expectations, the Webb telescope failed to find an atmosphere on an exoplanet from the most famous TRAPPIST-1 system. The space telescope observed a rocky planet in the TRAPPIST-1 system, and this was the first such study of such planets by the observatory.

Moreover Focus He wrote that in September of this year, soil samples from the famous giant asteroid Bennu will arrive on Earth. NASA made detailed explanations about this mission, which is historical for the USA.

As already written FocusIn November 2024, NASA announced that American astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will make the first flight around the moon in decades. This will be a kind of rehearsal before the first humans in the 21st century land on Earth’s moon in 2025.
