First liquid hydrogen vapor commissioned: how much will it reduce harmful emissions

The MF Hydra ferry can carry 300 passengers and 80 cars simultaneously.

Interesting Engineering writes that Norwegian company Norled has launched the world’s first liquid hydrogen ferry. Norled has been testing the system since the beginning of the year, and the Norwegian Maritime Authority has finally given final approval for the operation of this extraordinary vessel.

With a length of more than 82 meters and a capacity of 300 passengers and 80 vehicles, the MF Hydra ferry is virtually carbon-free, which contributes greatly to environmental protection.

According to the engineers at LMG Marin, who created the project, the annual carbon emissions of such a ferry are 95% less than conventional ferries of similar capacity. The capacity of the liquid hydrogen tank is 80 cubic meters and the ferry itself was built by a Norwegian shipyard. The hydrogen fuel systems of the German company Linde Engineering are very reliable and have been repeatedly tested in other projects. In addition to the hydrogen engine, the ferry system uses two 200 kW fuel cells, two 440 kW generators and two Shottel propulsion propellers.

For now, the ferry will sail on a triangular route between Norway Hjelmeland, Skipavik and Nesvik. The ticket price is still unknown, but Norway is a very expensive country and a one-way ticket on a regular ferry will cost the passenger an average of 600 UAH.

Previously Focus He wrote that engineers are now developing an intensely hydrogen-powered airplane: it only needs to fly from Europe to Australia in 4 hours. The developers say this is the future of air travel.
