The military first tested three heavy drones: ROBUST, Type X and Wiesel

British Lieutenant Colonel James de St. John-Price says that unmanned vehicles weighing more than 5 tons could change the rules of war in the next 10 years.

For the first time in England, three heavy unmanned combat vehicles were tested in Dorset. Details of the project were learned by the Breaking Defense publication.

The Future Capability Group (FCG) team at the UK Ministry of Defense’s Defense Supply and Support Unit conducted “rigorous tests” on three drones weighing more than 5 tonnes over two weeks, assessing their speed and ability to navigate difficult terrain. communication performance. They tested three combat vehicles: ROBUST from Elbit, Type X from Milrem and Wiesel from Rheinmetall.

lt.

ROBUST is an unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Elbit Systems in collaboration with the Defense Research and Development Directorate of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and first introduced at the Eurosatory Defense and Security exhibition in June 2022. The machine is designed for autonomous tracking and hitting targets, it is based on the BLR-2 robotic platform.

ROBUST is armed with a 30mm Israeli cannon equipped with a fire control and flight control system, a situational awareness system. Thanks to the Elbit Iron Fist active protection system, it will be very difficult to damage the drone. ROBUST has a flying drone on board that can be launched for reconnaissance.

Milrem introduced the Type-X robotic tank at IDEX-2023 in February. The company positions the vehicle on the battlefield as a ground support vehicle for main tanks. The drone is equipped with a wide variety of weapons, such as the Cockerill II combat module, 25 to 50 mm caliber guns, and can also launch swarms of Hunter 2S kamikaze drones from Haicon.

Rheinmetall first demonstrated the Wiesel Wingman ground drone at AUSA in 2019. This is an improved version of the German Wiesel armored combat vehicle equipped with a module for launching Javelin anti-tank missiles.

Recently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed a drone of their own design, capable of firing with machine guns and Kalashnikov assault rifles. The machine can move around the battlefield on an ATV-shaped platform and fire at the command of the operator – the signals are transmitted through the cable, so they can not be confused.
