In a few days, the new Volkswagen ID.7 will debut. This model will also be offered with new APP550 engine designed and manufactured directly by Volkswagen Group Components in Kassel, Germany. The new unit was designed specifically for OIE platform with the aim of offering not only more power than the motors currently used in the ID range, but also improved efficiency.
As a result, the engine capable of developing a power of 210 kW (286 hp) with up to 550 Nm of torque The first models equipped with this new powertrain will go on sale from the end of the year. Carsten Bennewitzthe head of the department for the development of power units and energy systems, commented on the development work of the new unit:
Because the available space hasn’t changed, we’ve had to develop a new engine that delivers significant performance and efficiency improvements within the same constraints. This has become a major problem for the Components Group and the Technical Development Group. The result shows that we have been able to reduce the use of raw materials, while at the same time achieving significant improvements in vehicle efficiency.
Volkswagen wanted to share a few more details about the new powertrain it will be using in its electric vehicles. The German brand explains what it introduced new stator with a large number of windings and a large wire cross section. The rotor is also new. which can rely on a more powerful permanent magnet. Volkswagen has also been working on an inverter to make it more efficient. On top of all this, the engineers have “strengthened” the transmission so that it can handle the high torque of the new engine.
Always striving to increase overall efficiency, Volkswagen has improved thermal control system. In fact, this new unit can count on a cooling system that works without an electrically driven oil pump. Volkswagen explains:
The system is self-cooled by gears and specially shaped components for supplying and distributing oil. The oil is cooled by the vehicle’s cooling circuit, which maintains the engine’s operating temperature. Outside, the stator is equipped with a water cooler.
Volkswagen will probably talk about this engine even further, perhaps already during the presentation of the new ID.7 expected in a few days. It remains only to wait for more detailed information in order to better get acquainted with the novelties of the new power unit of the new electrics of the German brand.
