Euro 7, Volkswagen asks for a one-year delay in the entry into force of the law on April 14, 2023

The new Euro 7 emissions regulation continues to generate debate. As you know, the content of the new legislation several concerns have been raised both from the political world and from some manufacturers who have warned of the impact on the automotive sector. Let’s talk about Euro 7 again, now, Volkswagen which essentially asks the European Union delay of at least a year the entry into force of the new rules on emissions.

CAUSES

In short, the German automaker is asking the EU postpone the introduction of new Euro-7 standards to autumn 2026. The extension is needed to make sure that all of its models could comply with the new regulations by fall 2027. This is a very specific request as Volkswagen says it can adapt its vehicles to comply with the new regulations. However, to do so need time. In short, the German manufacturer is asking for the law to go into effect in mid-2024, giving automakers two years to start implementing the standards and three years to tailor their entire vehicle range.

However, as you know, the EU intends to complete negotiations with member countries within a year and start implementing emission rules in 2025. The European Commission, in fact, believes that the new legislation should come into effect as soon as possible reduce the harmful emissions of endothermic vehicles that remain on the road.

Expressing its position on Euro 7, Volkswagen indicates that if there is no such extension, it may be forced to permanently suspend production of several of its models in Europe.. In addition to all this, the automaker has also asked the European Union to shelve other aspects of the new regulation. In particular, the one regarding limits on particulate emissions from brakes and tire wear. It would take several years for Volkswagen to implement such standard standards due to the lack of suppliers capable of meeting the new requirements.
