Unexpected return. Giving puppies table scraps is good for their bellies and old age

A new study shows that dogs actually suffer no harm from their owners’ food, at least at an early age.

For decades, it has been debated whether to give leftovers from the table to pets. A new study from IFLScience, the University of Helsinki, seems to put an end to a longstanding controversy — leftovers can be healthy, but only for puppies.

Chronic enteropathy (CE) is a series of gastrointestinal disorders that last about three weeks or more and is often a common problem in older dogs. In the new study, the researchers focused on understanding what causes CE in dogs later in life. Researchers now believe that gastrointestinal upsets in older dogs may be due to diet at a younger age.

Researchers point out that diet plays an important role in a pet’s health:

  • gut microbiome;
  • intestinal barrier;
  • immunity;
  • intestinal physiology.

The scientists note that despite the importance of diet in pet health, researchers currently have little knowledge of how early dieting affects the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders later in life, particularly in dogs.

During the study, the team used data from a survey that included more than 16.5 thousand buyers and aimed to examine the diet of pets. The surveys included information such as:

  • to breed;
  • environment;
  • health situation;
  • Life style;
  • the diet and eating habits of dogs;
  • chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • frequency of symptoms;
  • age of onset of the disorder.

Scientists have found that feeding young (2-6 months) and adolescence (6-18 months) raw meat and table scraps protects against enteroencephalopathy later in life. In simple terms, consumption of raw bone and cartilage, as well as table scraps, resulted in fewer KE-related problems later in life.

Also, a diet of highly processed carbohydrates, i.e. dry food in infancy and adolescence, and rawhide in puppies, was an important risk factor for the development of CE in old age. Researchers suggest that the reason for this link may be in the way food is processed.

Now, scientists suggest that dog owners can affect their pets’ gut health by giving puppies and young dogs a variety of fresh foods, including cartilage, bones and scraps, even in addition to dry food.

Note that this study only established an association between diet and chronic enteropathy. More research is needed to elucidate the detailed mechanisms and confirm a causal relationship.
