The study used data from the Swedish Longitudinal Health Study, which included approximately 13,000 people aged 16-64. The researchers analyzed a range of lifestyle factors, including physical activity, smoking, alcohol use and weight, as well as workplace stress and pre-existing medical conditions.

The scientists also examined the distance between the participant’s home and workplace and the socioeconomic status of the surrounding areas.

The results show that commuting more than 3 km (1.9 miles) increases the likelihood of being physically inactive and overweight, as well as poor sleep. People who work more than 40 hours a week and commute more than five hours a week are also more likely to be physically inactive and have trouble sleeping.

In addition, participants with higher socioeconomic status or those who work near bars are more likely to have harmful drinking habits. These results persisted even after adjusting for age, chronic illness, psychiatric disorders, and occupation.

While there was no ideal commute or office location that could be determined from the study, the researchers were able to observe that participants who traveled 3km or less to work were more physically active.

They may have benefited from it being easier to bike or walk to work, or to have more time to exercise before and after work.

But the results regarding weight, sleep, and fluid intake were less clear. More research is needed to explore these factors and determine the similarity of results for people living in different parts of the world.
