The staggering decline and eventual collapse of this living society between 850 and 1000 years ago remains a mystery, but while the remnants of the Mayan family have survived to this day, their sudden mystery has long puzzled historians. Fortunately, the latest discoveries about their lifestyle have come from excavations of an ancient Mayan metropolis that has been hidden until now.
Deep in the Guatemalan rainforest lies a hitherto hidden ancient Maya city, nestled in a complex of nearly 400 interconnected settlements, hidden among the El Mirador basins. Some are more than 3,000 years old and intricately linked. Remarkably, archaeologists have unearthed 417 Mayan settlements connected by more than 170 kilometers by road; this is an ancient feat comparable to the world’s first highway system.
According to the scientists involved in the extensive study, the construction of this interconnected city dates back to BC. It started around 1000 years ago. e., in fact, opens up a vast history of humanity that had previously escaped human eyes.
Technological advances have made it possible to penetrate the dense foliage of the rainforest with unprecedented precision. Turning to the latest leading technology using light sensing and distance detection, the researchers were able to image panoramic expanses of the ancient city. Their findings strikingly reveal an intricate tapestry of interconnected settlements skillfully interwoven by an incredible network of roads.
With this new understanding of the scale of the city, explorers are ready to embark on expeditions with increased precision to discover a wealth of knowledge about this enigmatic civilization. But with 417 separate objects waiting to be discovered, their efforts will turn into an arduous journey of incredible proportions.
