Flooding in Emilia-Romagna, “quarantine” for hybrid and electric vehicles caught under water May 26, 2023 282

Emilia-Romagna faces flood effects which caused a lot of damage and, unfortunately, also several casualties. In the past few hours, the ruling issued Municipality of Ravenna at the request of the Fire Brigade caused a lot of discussion, because it only concerns hybrid and electric vehicles.

In fact, as a precaution, it has been suggested that dealerships and individuals owning hybrid vehicles (hybrid type not specified) and electric vehicles, put them in “quarantine” for 15 days these vehicles in case they are submerged due to flooding or if they are in a particularly humid environment. During this period, cars must be outdoors, at least 5 meters away from other vehicles or buildings.

As a precautionary measure, dealers and individuals who, for whatever reason, own electric and hybrid vehicles that have been flooded as a result of recent weather events or are in particularly humid environments should take some preventive measures to protect public safety. In particular, these vehicles must be quarantined for 15 days, that is, they must be in open areas, with a distance between one vehicle and another, from buildings and other vehicles of at least five meters. These measures were taken at the request of the fire department.

Obviously it needs to be done now very important premise. hybrid and electric cars are absolutely no less safe in the presence of large amounts of water. Batteries, after all, are custom made. Indeed, hybrid and electric vehicles can drive safely in the rain, and driving on flooded roads is not a problem. It is impossible not to note the appearance on the market of several 100% electric SUVs and pickups, designed to overcome any type of track and even fords (there are already similar plug-in models).

At first, someone called this news “fake news”, thinking that it was spread in order to make it look bad, especially electric cars. In fact, everything was true. We reiterate that the decision to introduce this special quarantine for this purpose, only as a precautionary measure, was made after what happened. at the dealership where is the nissan leaf after being immersed in water for a while because of the flood he caught fire.

The problem was resolved in a short time without further damage, but the fire brigade chose to follow the path of prudence in order to avoid such interventions. Therefore, it was proposed to establish this particular measure for electrified vehicles. It should be said that, with the exception of the specific case of the dealership, there appear to have been no other reports of electric or hybrid vehicles catching fire after the flood.
