Deputy Alexander Khinshtein believes that access to the World Wide Web can be closed “from the outside”, therefore, he called for the strengthening of Runet.
Russians may soon be disconnected from the global internet. Such information was published on the telegram channel of Alexander Khinshtein, deputy of the State Duma and chairman of the information policy committee, on Thursday, July 6.
According to him, Russia’s Internet can be “turned off from the outside” (the politician did not explain what this specifically means). Therefore, the “World Wide Web” – the native analogue of Runet should be prepared for it and everything should be done to make it sustainable and viable.
Khinshtein convinces journalists and the public that the Russian Federation does not want to introduce an internal and closed Internet system from the whole world, as in North Korea. But the relevant departments and ministries are preparing for the fact that the country may leave the main lines of communication.
The politician also added that the global drop in Internet connectivity on Wednesday (July 5th) was a planned exercise.
Recall that on July 5, the Russian media wrote that they are trying to shut down the global Internet in the Russian Federation. According to journalists, this may be a test of whether Runet can withstand the load if disconnected from the international network. As a result, citizens could not buy train tickets, and Russian Railways blamed the hackers for everything.
It was also reported that on June 16 sovereign internet in the Russian Federation will be allowed only with a passport. Even a VPN will not help citizens connect to a regular Internet network.
