Opening of Autostrade, fifth lane of the A8 Milano-Laghi motorway, 26 September 2023 10

Motorways of Italy opened first 5-lane section of the A8 motorway Milano-Laghi. Thanks to this infrastructure work, it will be possible to increase the capacity of one of the busiest arteries in the country. Only in the section where the fifth lane operates, 170 thousand cars pass per day, and during peak periods their number reaches 200 thousand units.

In particular, a fifth lane was created between Milan’s northern barrier and the connection with the A9 Lainate – Como – Chiasso motorway. It’s a stretch 4.4 km. Thanks to this intervention, it will be possible to reduce travel time, with an estimated savings of 1 million hours per year. Among the most important measures for the benefit of the territory carried out by Autostrade per l’Italia are the new Lainate tunnel, two coplanar roads, a new roundabout, a new overpass, other connections with the municipality of Rho and bicycle paths.

Investments supported by Aspi for the construction of the fifth lane amounted to approximately 200 million euros. Thus, Milan Laghi becomes the first and only five-lane motorway in Italy. Aspi emphasizes that the entire A8 modernization project is characterized by “a very sustainable approach, both in the management of construction phases and in the implementation of measures that benefit the environment and the quality of life of the urban fabric“.

Particular attention was paid to the reuse of excavation materials (approximately 88% of them were reused in intervention construction works) and water protection (100% of the drainage system is closed and monitored). There are also plans to plant 10 hectares of native tree species near the city, which will help improve air quality and reduce fine dust emissions by up to 40%.
