Stellantis and Samsung SDI announced that they want to jointly build a second battery plant in the United States, in addition to the one already planned in Kokomo, Indiana. The two companies that formed JV “StarPlus Energy” Systems Management provided additional information on the second battery plant project.
A new plant will also be built in Kokomo. Overall for this project $3.2 billion (€2.8 billion) will be invested.. The plant will create 1,400 new jobs. Thus, the total investment in both plants will be more than 6.3 billion dollars (5.5 billion euros), and a total of 2,800 new jobs will be created. Once the new plant reaches full capacity, it will be able to count on one production capacity 34 GWhThus, this is slightly higher than the other power plant in Kokomo (33 GWh), which is expected to open in the first quarter of 2025.
This will bring the total annual production capacity of Kokomo’s battery plants to 67 GWh. This new second plant, if there are no delays with the schedule, will begin its production activities in 2027, 2 years after the first. The new plant will be the sixth battery manufacturing facility in the world and will support the ambitious electrification program outlined in Dare forward 2030.
As a reminder, Stellantis’ industrial plan includes a goal of achieving 100% of battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe and 50% of BEV passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the US by 2030. To achieve this goal, the automotive group needs to achieve an annual battery capacity of 400 GWh. Mark StewartChief Operating Officer of Stellantis North America, commented:
Our battery manufacturing ecosystem is at the core of our electrification strategy, and our great partners Samsung SDI, the State of Indiana and the City of Kokomo made a compelling case for locating our sixth gigafactory in Kokomo. Our brands’ electric vehicles in North America play an important role in our commitment to provide clean, safe and affordable mobility for everyone and achieve our ambitious goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2038.
Yoon Ho ChoiPresident and CEO of Samsung SDI, added:
With the construction of the second StarPlus Energy battery plant, Samsung SDI will build the largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing base in North America. We expect Stellantis vehicles powered by Samsung SDI batteries to be equipped with cutting-edge technology to help accelerate the U.S. transition to the electric vehicle era.
