It is now known that there is a lot of water ice on Mars and that when you melt it you can get water, and when you split the water you can get oxygen and hydrogen. However, this requires catalysts, that is, compounds that support the splitting of water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen molecules.

To create these catalysts, scientists used a specially trained robotic chemist who studied meteorites on Mars. The robot scanned meteorites on Mars using a laser and found that more than 3.7 million molecules could be extracted from iron, nickel, manganese, magnesium, aluminum and calcium in the rocks, the study shows.

Without intervention from scientists, the robot selected, synthesized and tested 243 different molecules to determine the best catalyst for splitting water. As a result, he created a catalyst that can split water at minus 37 degrees Celsius. Such low temperatures exist on Mars.

According to scientists, this catalyst effectively produces oxygen by splitting water molecules. While it took the robot a month and a half to create this catalyst, a human would have to search for the best catalyst for nearly 2 thousand years using existing methods.

At the same time, the authors of the study say that a robot chemist cannot be completely independent in carrying out such work, he needs people who will at least create the necessary program of his actions. The robotic chemist has worked in terrestrial conditions, and so scientists want to find out whether he could work in Martian conditions, where the density and composition of the atmosphere, humidity, gravity and temperature are different from those on Earth.
