In a new study led by Lars Fadnes, a public health researcher at the University of Bergen in Norway, the team modeled the life expectancy of nearly 500,000 people by documenting their eating habits over time. Data were obtained from the British Biobank and collection began in 2006.

The team divided the participants into groups based on their diet and how it changed over time:

  • unhealthy eaters;
  • average eaters;
  • healthy eaters;
  • Those who follow the longevity diet.

The scientists also took into account the recipients’ alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activity in their results. The team found that life expectancy for men and women in their 40s who gradually transitioned from unhealthy to healthy diets increased by an average of 9 years.

But those who ditched sugary drinks and processed meats and ate a diet rich in whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables and moderate amounts of fish (the so-called longevity diet) increased life expectancy by an average of 10 years.

A significantly smaller increase in life expectancy was observed in groups of recipients who initially adhered to an average diet, as well as in groups of recipients who improved their eating habits later in life. But scientists have found that even people as young as 70 can increase their life expectancy by 4-5 years if they follow a healthy diet, or the so-called longevity diet.

According to the study’s other author, nutrition researcher Catherine Livingston from Deakin University, this study is important because it highlights once again that nutrition has a significant impact on our life expectancy.

At the same time, scientists acknowledge that larger studies covering different countries, ages and races will be needed to make sure these can be applied to all people.
