“Anti-sanctions” chip Huawei Kirin 9000S has just been released, but it is already 3 years behind: what’s the matter

During testing, it was revealed that the Huawei Kirin 9000S is significantly behind its predecessor, the Kirin 9000, by up to 33% in terms of GPU performance.

Nanoreview.net analysts tested the Kirin 9000 chip, which was released at the TSMC factory 3 years ago, and the new Kirin 9000S, which Huawei has already released independently under US sanctions. It turns out that the “old man” has outgrown the new product, Toms Hardware writes.

In tests using AnTuTu 10, Geekbench 6, 3DMark Wild Life and numerous mobile games, the Kirin 9000S processor performed well overall compared to the previous version of the Kirin 9000. But there is a caveat. Energy efficiency values were higher than the old model, and it could not handle graphical workloads. However, its performance on general-purpose workloads was quite acceptable.

“The results are not surprising, as it is difficult to beat a 5nm processor with a 7nm SoC without sacrificing energy efficiency and cost,” journalists wrote.

Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 9000S chip scored around 900,000 points in AnTuTu 10, the same as the original Kirin 9000, but was 33% behind its predecessor in GPU performance. Surprisingly, despite lower clock speeds and the same core count, the Kirin 9000S was 4% faster in the single-threaded Geekbench 6 test and 17% faster in the multi-threaded Geekbench 6 test. The Kirin 9000S lag in 3DMark Wild Life is likely due to the company’s inability to create a GPU as fast as the 24-cluster Arm Mali-G78 clocked at 759.MHz.

Since SMIC’s 2nd generation 7nm technology is less advanced than TSMC’s N5 manufacturing node, the Kirin 9000S is less efficient than the Kirin 9000. The authors of the material believe that smartphones based on the “anti-sanctions” chip will shrink faster.

We have previously written that the American company Intel repackages and supplies the latest chips to China.

It was also reported that China has launched a powerful 5nm Kirin 9006C processor, bypassing US sanctions on the Chinese technology sector.
