Technology sodium-ion batteries This seems to be of increasing interest to automakers. BYD, for example, has just started building a plant to produce batteries that, due to their characteristics, can be used in certain types of electric vehicles, such as microcars and city cars.
Now comes the news that Stellantisthrough its venture fund Stellantis Ventures, decided invest in Tiamata French company that develops and markets sodium ion battery technology.
Sodium-ion battery chemistry promises “reduce costs, increase stability and improve low temperature performance“. Ned CouricChief Engineer and Technologist at Stellantis, explains that finding new greener, more affordable battery options that use widely available raw materials is an important part of the Dare Forward 2030 plan.
Our customers expect zero-emission vehicles with range, performance and convenience. This is the goal of Stellantis and our partners. Let’s work together to develop innovative technologies for the future.
To achieve its electrification plan, the automotive group is providing approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity. In addition, through a series of agreements, Stellantis has secured the supply of raw materials for electric vehicles until 2027. At the same time, the Group is investing in alternative technologies such as solid-state batteries with Factorial Energy, lithium-sulfur chemistry with Lithene and Sodium Ions with Tiamat.
Stellantis Ventures participated in a €22 million funding round led by Tiamat. Thanks to the funds raised, Tiamat will begin construction Sodium-ion battery production plant in France.
These will initially be targeted at electrical appliances and fixed storage applications, with production later expanded to include second-generation products specifically designed for BEVs.
