Stellantis Invests in SteerLight LiDAR Technology March 20, 2024 2

Stellantis is investing a lot of resources in development of driver assistance systems. In the future, the car company’s models will be able to count about SteerLight LiDAR technology which will improve the functioning of ADAS systems.

In fact, Stellantis Ventures, Stellantis’ venture capital fund, announced investments at SteerLight, which has developed a new generation of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) detection technologies.

GREAT PRECISION

Stellantis says this solution will significantly improve the performance of the driving assistance systems that will be included in its future models.

The system detects the environment in 3D with previously unattainable resolution and accuracy, at a lower production cost than currently available LiDAR systems. The technology will provide drivers of future Stellantis vehicles with significant improvements in driver assistance systems (ADAS), including autonomous driving.

SteerLight this is a startup which was born as a subsidiary of the French research institute CEA-Leti. How does the company’s LiDAR technology work? Here’s how Stellantis describes it:

SteerLight uses frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR based on silicon photonics technology, allowing the device to be placed on a microchip. It is a compact and robust system thanks to the absence of moving parts, which guarantees wide flexibility of use in the automotive sector. This allows us to overcome the limitations of existing LiDAR technology due to excessive component size and high cost. Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar technology provides highly accurate detection depth and very fast data transmission, and is immune to environmental interference and interference from other devices.

For Stellantis, this is a very important investment to achieve its future goals. Ned Couric, chief engineer and technologist at Stellantis, emphasizes that improving autonomous driving remains a priority for the company. With SteerLight technology, the automotive group will now be able to expand and improve ADAS applications.
