“They are giving positions”: A UAV operator talks about drones that are certified to receive APU

Pilot Nastya Konfederat explained that some drone developers have not been able to get their inventions approved by the Ministry of Defense for the third year in a row. On the other hand, certified UAV manufacturers sometimes offer low-quality products.

The Ukrainian army on the front lines uses various types of UAVs, some of which are approved by the Ministry of Defense, while others are not. At the same time, certified drones can sometimes be dangerous for the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as they give away their location. Nastya Konfederat, external pilot of the Wings unit of the GUR, spoke to the NV media about whether the company’s shortcomings in the production of UAVs have been corrected.

The Confederation spoke to reporters about two types of problems that drone operators face on the battlefield. One of the problems is the “large number” of uncertified devices used by the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to him, such devices account for up to 80%. The second problem is the poor quality of some UAVs that are certified by the state and receive money for mass production.

The army announced that it is working with an uncertified device even now. I did not mention any comments about its work. By the way, the developers of these drones say that they will enter certification since 2022, but the matter has not been completed yet.

“But it was all a scam and the plane I’m flying on is not under government contract,” he said.

As for the UAVs, whose suitability for the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been approved by the Ministry of Defense, not everything is in order with some of them. For example, when used, they turn out to be dangerous for fighters; they give away their location to the enemy. The military announced that the electronic warfare systems of the Russian Armed Forces “saw” Ukrainian positions, and then a shell hit them.

The Confederation met with one such drone manufacturer and complained about the shortcomings. According to him, the manufacturer assured that the comments would be taken into account and everything would be fixed. However, nothing has changed since then, Nastya emphasized. The company was not named during the interview.

“I tell him: ‘You’re going to shoot people down.’ So I have a big question as to why they’re still in service,” the pilot was quoted as saying by reporters.

Nastya Konfederat is a 37-year-old Ukrainian female soldier who joined the Defense Forces in 2015. She described her service in the Counter-Terrorism Operation Focus In 2019.

It should be noted that at the beginning of 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine should receive 1 million UAVs in the next 12 months. After that, a new project of the Ministry of Digital Transformation was announced: citizens are encouraged to assemble drones themselves and send them to the front. In the meantime, more and more new types of drones have appeared. For example, in May, the Ministry of Defense demonstrated devices equipped with small arms to hit enemy positions.

We remind you that on July 3, the New York Times published an article in which it was stated that Western politicians were concerned about the flow of various types of UAVs that began to be used in the Russia-Ukraine war.
