The Polish military claims that the Zwalczania Dronów System can protect infrastructure by destroying drones at relatively close ranges.
The Polish company Zakłady Mechaniczne “Tarnów”, together with the Warsaw Military University of Technology (WAT), has developed an anti-drone system based on the 12.7 mm WLKM machine gun, called System Zwalczania Dronów. This is stated on the official website of the Polish Army.
System Zwalczania Dronów is reportedly designed to counter nano- and micro-UAVs, as well as other small flying objects. Its main functions include detection, reconnaissance, indication, tracking and combating drones.
As stated by the Ministry, System Zwalczania Dronów is a short-range weapon, which is also called the “weapon of the last chance”. Such systems are used when the drone is already relatively close. The technology is ideal for protecting critical infrastructure.
The system consists of a remotely controlled firing unit equipped with a multi-barreled 12.7 mm WLKM Gatling type machine gun with a fire rate of up to 3600 rounds per minute. Thanks to the optoelectronic head with a high-quality day and thermal imaging camera and laser rangefinder, you can accurately determine the object and its distance. The radar station allows you to detect UAVs up to 3.5 kilometers away.

“This is innovative in the sense that we can see small targets at fairly large distances, track them especially at night, when the drone is completely invisible, but we can see this using a thermal imaging camera and, if necessary, combat it,” said the Military University of Technology project The manager is Kamil Vaclavik.
It is also reported that System Zwalczania Dronów is an unmanned system. The operator station is designed to allow remote firing from a safe location. Both automatic and manual control, as well as a combination of both functions, are possible. The weapon can be installed on a fixed or mobile platform.
