The entrepreneur wants to remove date stamps on messages in the feed to “improve the interface” and set a registration fee for new users.
American billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is considering changes to the functionality of Platform X (formerly Twitter). It plans to remove date stamps from messages and impose an $8 registration fee for new users, Fortune reported, citing sources.
Insiders say Musk has been floating the idea of removing dates from X’s messages in recent weeks. The entrepreneur recommends removing dates from the public feed, and by clicking on it you can see the time when the post was created. According to Musk, this will improve the user experience. But some staff believe this will make the platform “confusing” and worsen the misinformation problem, with most users simply scrolling through the feed without engaging with individual posts.
Reporters noted that Representative X did not respond to requests for comment.
Elon Musk wants paid registration for X
Musk plans to implement an $8 fee for signing up X number of new users to the platform as early as February 2025. According to media sources, new users will also get a free month of X Premium, a $7-a-month subscription that gives users a blue verification check.
An insider explained that the X registration fee has been in the works for several months, and the company is positioning it as a step towards combating bots on the platform. A year ago, this idea was tested in the Philippines and New Zealand, where the payout was set at $1.
Although Musk said at the time that it wasn’t about increasing profits, he now says paid registration is “the only way” to make X profitable, the source said.
Let’s remember that Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Meta Corporation, announced on January 7 that he was ending the fact-checking program on Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms. He explained this as a desire to return to freedom of speech, and New York Times journalists linked this decision to Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
On January 8, Elon Musk joked with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who responded to US President Donald Trump’s statements by saying his country would never join the United States. Musk called Trudeau a “girl” and said he was “no longer the governor of Canada.”
