Leonardo DiCaprio and Jeff Bezos are currently involved in efforts to protect vital parts of the Amazon rainforest through the Save Our Planet project. Reported by Variety.
Two nonprofits – DiCaprio’s Re:Wild Conservation and Bezos’ Nature Solutions – are noted to have contributed $200 million to the POP Challenge, which will “support the expansion and management of Brazil’s protected areas and indigenous peoples”.
The large donation will be used over the next four years to help Brazil achieve zero deforestation in the Amazon and accelerate the South American country’s transition to a sustainable and green economy. The organization also works with the Brazilian Minister of the Environment, the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, and the nine states of the Amazon.
“We are inspired by Brazil’s ambitious goals to protect the Amazon, one of the planet’s most important wildlife habitats, and we are excited to be able to support these efforts through the Protect Our Planet project,” said the 48-year-old Titanic star.
The main goal is to prevent further destruction of the Amazon rainforest by promising to stop deforestation on 145 million acres of unallocated public land. To assist with this, a commitment will be made to improve the management of existing protected areas and to protect the rights of indigenous communities.
Christian Samper, Managing Director and President of the Bezos Land Foundation, emphasized the vital importance of the Amazon in the ecosystem.
“The Amazon is critical to the future of global biodiversity and climate, and we applaud the commitment of President Lula and the Brazilian government to protect it,” he said.
More broadly, the Save Our Planet goal “helps ensure that at least 30 percent of nature – both on land and at sea – is protected by 2030,” according to the POP website.
“It’s not just about numbers, it’s about keeping our planet forever a sustainable home for humans and wildlife alike,” explains Samper.
Research shows that protected areas are one of the most cost-effective ways to protect nature, vulnerable populations and the climate if they are well managed and respect the rights and needs of indigenous peoples and local communities.
The Protect Our Planet program is the largest privately funded biodiversity conservation effort in history.
