The founder of KVN owned 51% of AMiK, and his wife – 49%. In 2019, Maslyakov Jr. owned 50%, his parents owned 25.5% and 24.5%, respectively, but now the TV presenter’s son owns 100% of the shares.

How did Alexander Maslyakov become the founder of KVN?

Alexander Maslyakov was born in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) in the family of a military man and a housewife. As a result, the family moved to Moscow, where Alexander graduated from the energy department of the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers, worked at the Giprosakhar design institute, and in 1968 graduated from the Higher Courses for Television Workers.

As he himself said in an interview, he started working in television in 1964 by chance in the Main Editorial Directorate of Youth Programs. After the employees of the youth editorial office of Central Television filmed a “fun program”, they invited him as one of the five presenters. Before Maslyakov there was a club of cheerful and resourceful people; students from various Soviet universities joined it.

He was the host of the programs “KVN”, “Hello, we are looking for talents!”, “Come on, girls!”, “Come on, guys!” and others. Even after the closure of KVN in 1972, Maslyakov remained on television. There he met his wife Svetlana. The couple had an only son, Alexander Maslyakov Jr.

In the 1970s, there were rumors that Maslyakov was in prison for illegal currency transactions. Allegedly, that’s why he disappeared from the airwaves. He denied this.

In 1986, KVN was revived on television, and he became its artistic director. Already in the late 1990s, the TV presenter founded the creative association “AMiK”, which in the 2000s earned about $ 3.5 million a year by selling the rights to show the show to the Russian Channel One.

Maslyakovs: attitude towards Putin and the war in Ukraine

In January 2012, Alexander Maslyakov Sr. became a member of the “People’s Headquarters” (in Moscow) of the presidential candidate for the third term, Vladimir Putin.

Since August 2017, Maslyakov has been in the database of the Myrotvorets website. As stated on the website:

  • Rejection of Russian aggression.
  • Deliberate violation of the State Border of Ukraine with the aim of entering the Crimea captured by Russian invaders.
  • And as a participant in the legalization of the annexation of Crimea and the terrorist organization DPR.

Alexander Maslyakov allowed teams from educational institutions from the occupied Crimea and partially occupied Donetsk region to participate in the KiViN-2016 humor festival.

In 2023, he visited occupied Mariupol with two teams of the KVN Major League, saying that “our people live here, and KVN has always united the country.”

KVN members also complained that the program was forbidden to make jokes about Putin and Russian political beauties. Former leader of the SOK team and editor of the KVN Major League Dmitry Kolchin said that there are no longer writers working on political satire in KVN.

According to Kolchin, the figures on political issues included in the program are highly commendable. Every sketch mentioning a political figure must be approved by several editors.

Alexander Maslyakov said that journalists do not need to draw “questionable conclusions”. He said that jokes about political figures, Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of other countries “were, are and will be”.

The KVN press service also denied the existence of censorship. “If there was such a ban, nothing would happen on television,” the KVN press service said.
