Senator Kirsten Sinema Reaches Deal With Democrats On Inflation Reduction Act

senator Kirsten Cinema said she would soon be ready to “move forward” on a revised version of the health, climate and deficit reduction package put forward by Senate Democrats as Inflation Reduction Actopening the door for party lawmakers to pass the stalled bill as early as this weekend.

The Arizona Democratic senator announced this Thursday her support for a fiscal and environmental plan championed by President Joe Biden that advances its approval and represents a major victory for the Democratic president.

It will take the support of all 50 Democratic senators to pass any legislation in an evenly divided Senate, given the party’s narrow majority and Republican resistance to action on the climate crisis.

In her statement, the senator, who belongs to the most conservative wing of the Democratic Party, announced her support for the plan promoted by Biden after a clause that would have caused financial harm to private investors was dropped.

He also noted that they have made further adjustments to the second provision, which establishes a new minimum tax for corporations that currently pay nothing to the US government.

“We took a bold step tonight to bring down inflation and the cost of living for American families. The law also facilitates the largest investment in history to combat climate change and improve energy security,” Biden said upon learning of the Sinema decision.

The plan already received the approval last week of another key Democratic senator, Joe Manchin, who reached an agreement with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to support the legislative initiative.

The bill provides for more than 669 billion US dollars. dedicated to reducing shortages, energy security programs, making it easier for Medicare to negotiate prices for some expensive drugs, and fighting climate change in the next decade.

This amount is significantly less than the $3 billion that the most left wing of the Democrats originally sought to allocate, but it represents the support of the Progressives in the months before the midterm elections, in which they have a majority in both houses of Congress.

In early July, Manchin told his party colleagues that he was not going to support Biden’s plans for climate change policies and tax increases.

These two provisions are a priority in the package that Biden and the Democrats want to approve ahead of the November legislative election to try to catch their breath in an extremely tight election race with the president’s minimal approval rating.

The bill also provides for a three-year extension, until 2025, of a program to reduce prices and expand affordable medical care.

– What is the a-rama vote and why is it important right now in the Senate
– Manchin and Schumer have reached an agreement on climate, health care and inflation that will allow for a vote on this measure in the Senate.
– The Fed raises the base rate by 0.75% in a new attempt to control inflation.
