Hoping to find them alive, Mexican authorities on Monday launched an operation to rescue ten miners who were trapped in a coal mine in the northern region of Coahuila on Wednesday afternoon. An underwater drone equipped with a high-definition camera and light prepares to enter one of three wells flooded after the team, in full excavation, came across an adjacent area full of water, which collapsed and flooded the site and prevented them from leaving. . Only five workers managed to escape and had to be hospitalized. Thrown out by a “jet of water”, according to local media.

According to Luis Crecencio Sandoval, Minister of National Defense (Sedena), the drone dive will give a detailed picture of how things are going inside the mine before divers can descend to begin the rescue midway through this week. ). The operation is planned to be carried out through a third well, the water level of which has fallen from 34 meters to 19 meters in the last five days thanks to the extraction work carried out by powerful pumps that throw out 328 liters per second.

The announcement of the drone has caused a stir at the camp where relatives of miners remain in Aguhita, a community in the U.S. border state of Coahuila. Some worriedly hoped that this inspection would expedite the entry of divers.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who checked on the spot on Sunday the work done by more than 400 troops stationed in the area, indicated that he maintained “faith” in saving ten miners alive. Despite criticism from workers’ families, the president said his government “acted quickly” and promised that responsibility would be clarified. “First, salvation, and do not worry about the other, that there will be justice. We will not forget,” he said.

As a first step, the Attorney General’s Office announced on Sunday that it had asked the Department of Labor for information on safety inspections it had carried out at the mines in Coahuila. Unfortunately, this region is known for frequent accidents at its fields. The latest occurred in June 2021 in the municipality of Mouskis, when another flood killed seven miners.
