Starting from this academic year, California will be the first state to implement the Universal Meals program, which will provide free meals to all schoolchildren.
The Universal Meal Program will ensure that all children have access to free school meals.which represents a big win for the students.
Merced Union High School District (MUHSD) took advantage. Out of necessity, the school district has already given away free breakfasts and lunches, taking the pressure off students in line for food..
Now across the state, instead of worrying about lunch, students can get delicious meals for free.
California will have The biggest free school lunches in America.
Average, 1 in 5 Californians don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
That’s why MUHSD Director of Food Services Erin Tassy said health and justice matter most.
“When a student went through the lunch line and was considered a free student, it definitely created a barrier to getting food during the day,” Tassie said.
The program is part Assembly 130 Act, signed into law by California Gov. Gavin Newsom last July.
Nutrition programs are funded by the state and the federal government.
