CNN journalist pulled interview with Iranian president after he demanded she wear a veil

The death of a 22-year-old girl, who was detained by police for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly, sparked a wave of violent protests in Iran. where dozens of women took to the streets to express their displeasure. However, this was not the only expression of protest.

Recently It was revealed that Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s country correspondent, refused to be interviewed by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi after he demanded that she wear a veil.

Amanpour’s last tweet in the thread was accompanied by a photo of her in front of an empty chair.

Amanpour described how her scheduled interview with Raisi fell through, describing the assistant’s request as “an unexpected and unprecedented condition”.

According to CNN’s chief international anchor, he said that planned to ask Raisi about the protests that took place in Iran after Mahsa Amini, A 22-year-old woman who was detained by the country’s vice police for allegedly violating their strict dress code has died in custody.

Iranian authorities said Amini died last Friday after falling ill and falling into a coma while waiting with other women detained by the vice police. Authorities acknowledged the arrests during subsequent protests but denied Amini’s mistreatment and said they were investigating his death.

Amanpour said she and her CNN team planned the interview for weeks, spending eight hours on Wednesday setting up translation equipment, lighting and cameras.

Nonetheless, An aide to the Iranian president approached and said that the president was “inviting” Amanpour to wear a hijab in recognition of the holy months of Muharram and Safar.

“I politely declined,” Amanpour wrote on his networks. “We are in New York, where there is no law or tradition regarding headscarves. I pointed out that no previous Iranian president required this when I interviewed them outside of Iran.”
