Moldova, which is facing a serious economic and energy crisis, needs financial assistance in the amount of 1.1 billion euros. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu.
He acknowledged that the situation in the country remains difficult, and Chisinau is experiencing difficulties due to the reduction in Russian gas supplies.
“The government is seeking to find alternative supplies, but Moldova needs financial assistance of 1.1 billion euros,” – said Popescu during his speech at the Paris Peace Forum.
According to the minister, the issue of allocation of aid will be discussed at the donors’ meeting within the “Moldova Support Platform” in Paris on November 21.
Moldova is currently experiencing a severe energy crisis due to rising energy prices. The authorities report that they are looking for alternative energy sources, since before that the Moldavskaya GRES was used, which sold energy at a price of $62.5 per 1 MWh. In November, the state enterprise and the Moldavskaya GRES could not agree, so Chisinau began to buy electricity from Romania , but the price was already 90 euros per 1 MWh.
On October 9, protests began in the country. Then about 60 thousand residents of Chisinau went to a mass demonstration. The demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction with rising prices and the current government.
On October 10, police dispersed demonstrators who had blocked roads in the center of Chisinau. The protesters demanded that the authorities compensate for the sevenfold increase in gas tariffs. Maia Sandu has shifted the blame for the energy crisis to the previous government and has already urged residents to reduce their gas consumption.
On October 11, supporters of the Shor party went on a new rally demanding Sandu’s resignation. On October 23, protesters staged a fight with police officers during a rally in Chisinau.
