US Ambassador to NATO Julian Smith commented on the recognition of the Russian Federation as a state that supports terrorism. In his view, this is not beneficial and he stated that Washington will continue to pursue its strategy of restraining the Russian Federation through sanctions and export restrictions. “I think you’ve heard the comments from President Biden and others in the administration. The sentiment in Washington could backfire in the sense that it’s not really needed yet and could, for example, hurt our ability to bring humanitarian aid. “Export a certain amount of grain to Ukraine,” Smith said.
The American diplomat added that because this would increase the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government, the United States is more focused on working with partners for additional ways to tighten anti-Russian sanctions and enforce them.
Smith also said tougher sanctions would prevent the Russian military from advancing and creating new opportunities for Moscow in the war against Ukraine.
It was previously reported that the NATO Parliamentary Assembly recognized Russia as a terrorist state and in this context called for the establishment of a special International Tribunal against the military aggression of the Russian Federation. The resolution of the Assembly noted the requirements for the creation of ways to obtain compensation from the Russian Federation for the damage done to Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden did not support the idea of recognizing Russia as a state that supports terrorism. When asked by reporters about the advisability of such a move, the head of the White House briefly replied “no”.
