Coup attempt in Germany: Conspirators may be closely linked to Russia, – media

The “Reich Citizens” (“Reichsburger”) group of conspirators who wanted to stage a coup in Germany may be closely linked to Russia. This was written by the German edition of Bild.

Günther Krings (CDU), spokesperson for the legal policy of the Union faction, said that “Reich Citizens” were specifically looking for the proximity of Russia and contacts with Russian representatives in Germany.

“Such connections would again greatly increase the danger that Reich citizens pose to our state,” Krings continued.

Jakub Janda, research director of the Czech Center for European Security Policy Values, said the Russian Federation has used its special services for years to establish links with movements against existing authorities in the West. Some are opposition parties, others are outspoken opponents of the constitutional order.

According to the expert, any violation and weakening of Western democracies is in the interest of Russia.

“With the Kremlin at war with Ukraine, Moscow needs to somehow divert the attention of Kiev’s military supporters,” he said.
