The suspect remained in the house with the child all day. while the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tried to persuade him to surrender safe and sound.
The exact circumstances of how the barricade ended and the condition of the suspect were not immediately known. but apparently It ended around 9 p.m. Wednesday, when the boy was safe and the suspect was described as “dead” when an ambulance was called.
At some point during the confrontation, a series of shots were fired.
The situation began on Tuesday evening when police saw a white Kia SUV moving at 132 mph on Highway 14 near Via Princessa at 11:44 p.m.
It was then that CHP officers chased the suspect in a chase that spanned several freeways.
CHP said the suspect, identified only as Fernando, called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and told the dispatch team that he was armed and that there was a child in the car.
“He also said he would open fire on the CHP officers if we didn’t stop pursuing,” the spokesman said.
A spokesman said that at 00:47 a.m., a suspect opened fire on officers near 17th Street E and Avenue Q in the Palmdale neighborhood. The officers were not hurt.
The chase ended when the suspect drove to his home in a Lido Estates mobile home in Lancaster and locked himself inside.
“The suspect got out of the car with the baby, pointed a gun at the baby’s head and slowly walked away from our employees,” the CHP said.
After barricading herself in the house for hours, the only message she relayed during the day was a note taped to the window asking for diapers for her son.
It is not clear if diapers were provided, but authorities attempted to deliver a mobile phone to the home with a robot to open communication lines.
“We want to end this peacefully,” Sheriff Miguel Meza said earlier in the day. “We want to see your side of the story. See what’s going on in his head. We want the child to be safe, this is our main concern. Your safety and the safety of your child is our primary concern.”
Alejandra Rosas, the suspect’s aunt, spoke to reporters at the scene and said the child was the suspect’s son.
“Fernando, please get out of the house,” she pleaded. “Please. I want to see you, I want to see the baby. Please.”
