The role of the Russian language in strengthening the language space of the CIS cannot be questioned. This was stated by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at an informal CIS summit on Monday.

Tokayev noted that cultural and humanitarian partnership is of everlasting importance in the CIS.

“Here the role of the Russian language, of course, cannot be subject to any doubt,” – noted the Kazakh head.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also said that he was confident that the official status of the cultural capital of the CIS given to St. Petersburg next year would further strengthen cultural ties between the Commonwealth states.

He also reminded that next year the CIS will celebrate the year of the Russian language.

In addition, according to him, Astana’s proposal to create an international organization to support the Russian language under the auspices of the Commonwealth will receive practical development.

An informal summit of leaders of the CIS countries started today in St. Petersburg. In addition to Vladimir Putin, the presidents of Belarus, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are participating in it.

The informal event, which will be held at the initiative of Putin, will last until December 27. It was reported that the leaders of the countries will sum up the results of the outgoing year, as well as discuss further cooperation to develop relations.
