“We have close ties with Belgrade”: Kremlin announces its support for Serbia on the backdrop of conflict with Kosovo

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, urged not to seek “Russia’s destructive influence” in the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo, adding that the Kremlin is closely monitoring the situation.

The Kremlin supports Serbia during the escalation of the conflict with the partially recognized Kosovo, and at the same time rejects statements about the “devastating influence” of the Russian Federation on the situation. This was expressed in a comment to reporters by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President on Wednesday (December 28th), RIA Novosti reported.

“Serbia is a sovereign country and it is absolutely wrong to look for some kind of destructive influence of Russia here… Serbia defends the rights of Serbs living in such difficult conditions in its immediate vicinity and naturally reacts harshly when these rights are violated. “The Kremlin spokesman said.

According to Peskov, the Russian Federation, which has close allies, historical, spiritual and other relations with Serbia, “follows very closely what is happening, especially how the rights of Serbs are guaranteed”.

“Of course, we support Belgrade in the measures taken,” said the press secretary of the Russian president.

A day ago, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic ordered the country’s armed forces to be prepared for war “at the highest level”.

Recall that one of the reasons for the worsening of the situation in northern Kosovo was the arrest of former Serbian police officer Dejan Pantic. He was accused of inflicting violence on officials preparing for local elections.
