Garage turned home catches fire and father dies

Still in shock, trying to figure out what happened, Jorge Ramirez said his mother and two younger brothers remain in the hospital after suffering third-degree burns following a fire at their home on Dec. 25.

In a horrific fire, his 34-year-old stepfather Sebastian Solis, who was the head of the family and agricultural worker, died.

The family lived in a garage converted into a small studio near the intersection of Guava and Ventura streets in Oxnard.

About three months ago, Jorge, 22, moved to another house with his wife, but he had a very good relationship with his family.

On December 24, they celebrated Christmas Eve together, and Jorge could not imagine that this would be the last time he would see his stepfather, whom he considered a father. They even planned to meet the next day to open presents.

Authorities said the small garage caught fire around 3 am on December 25. There were no smoke detectors in the studio.

Jorge’s mother and 7-year-old sister were taken to Torrance Memorial Medical Center, while his 12-year-old brother is in Los Angeles County Hospital.

On Tuesday, Jorge explained that he had been visiting his mother and brothers but was unable to speak to them because they were sedated. He calculated that it would take weeks or months for the injuries to heal.

He added that the situation seemed like a nightmare. The young man hoped that his family was all right and that they somehow managed to get out of the fire.

However, it is not. Arriving at the house, he found firefighters trying to put out the fire, and his relatives with severe burns to their faces, arms and torso.

She also saw the white sheet covering the body and knew immediately that it was her stepfather who died at the scene.

On his GoFundMe page, Jorge said that Solis was the backbone of the family and always made sure they didn’t lack anything.

“He is the one who kept my family together no matter what. He was a hardworking person who always took care of household problems,” said Jorge.

He identified his stepfather as a man who even worked overtime to provide for his family. With his departure, Jorge is now in charge of continuing the legacy.

Jorge assured that the funds raised will go to the funeral and burial of his stepfather, as well as to reimburse part of everything that his mother lost in the fire.

“I know it won’t be long and it won’t bring her husband back, but once she realizes that her husband is gone and her kids aren’t the same, I hope this will help her move on,” the young man said. . “It hurts to write this because I never expected it, but you never know what you’re going to go through in life.”

The cause of the incident is not yet known, but according to the authorities, it could be the result of burning candles.

Jorge indicated that they did not know the owners of the house, as they only rented a garage, and when he spoke to them, they were just as puzzled to find out what had happened.

Yesenia Ramirez, the young man’s wife, helped him create the page and it was she who took care of the well-being of Jorge and his family.

Jorge’s acquaintances indicated that this is the only page he approved, as there was another similar one that they do not know about.
