For his part, Colombian Ambassador to Caracas Armando Benedetti noted that the opening of this crossroads is “another sign of mutual trust” between neighboring countries. He assured that the opening of the bridge represents a “great start to the year” and stressed the work of both countries to normalize bilateral relations.
The opening of this two-way access – a structure dedicated to vehicular traffic between the Venezuelan state of Tachira and the Colombian department of Norte de Santander – is the most recent step in the normalization of diplomatic and trade relations between Colombia and Venezuela, a process that it began in August, after many years political tension.
Earlier this was stated by the Minister of Transport of Venezuela Ramon Velasquez Araguayan. renovations have been completed on this building which has never been used and that it was the scene of a standoff in 2019, when anti-Chavismas tried to bring in humanitarian aid without the permission of the Maduro government.
Work on the bridge included the installation of a checkpoint for the entry and exit of vehicles – through eight ticket offices – and the adaptation of spaces from which the passage of heavy vehicles and buses will be controlled. The discovery raised the expectations of business groups and governments, who see the move as “something big” for the two countries’ economies.
