Ukraine claims hundreds of Russian soldiers killed in one attack

Ukraine claims that 400 Russian soldiers were killed in a missile attack on the occupied Donetsk region.

The missile hit a building in Makiivka where Russian troops are believed to be stationed.

The number has not been verified. Pro-Russian authorities in this Ukrainian region acknowledged the existence of victimsbut did not confirm the figures provided by Kyiv.

Daniil Bezsonov, a senior Moscow-backed official in occupied Donetsk, said the missile hit Makiivka two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day.

“The vocational school was hit hard by the American Himars MLRS,” he said, referring to the US-supplied missiles.

“There were dead and wounded, the exact number is still unknown,” Bezsonov added in a message on the Telegram messaging system.

The Moscow-appointed government said at least 25 rockets were fired into the region overnight on New Year’s Eve.

Several Russian commentators and bloggers acknowledged the attack but suggested that the numbers were lower than stated.

Vladimir Solovyov, a Russian host, wrote on Telegram that “the losses were significant…but not even close” to 400.

According to the Ukrainian army, in addition to about 400 dead, 300 people were injured.

Attacks against the Ukrainian capital

A few hours after the shelling of Makiivka, Kyiv came under fire. The governor of the Ukrainian capital, Oleksiy Kuleba, said that drones and missiles hit key infrastructures.

In the Ukrainian capital, a man was injured due to the wreckage of a downed Russian drone, the mayor of the capital added.

These attacks came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wished victory and a “return to normal life” for Ukraine in 2023.

For his part, President Vladimir Putin said in his New Year’s address that Russia will fight to defend its sovereignty and independence.

The head of the city’s military administration, Sergei Popko, urged the population to stay in shelters.

The governor of the Kuleba region indicated that these were Shahed drones. Iranian productionand added that they were “directed against critical infrastructure.”

“The main thing now is to remain calm and stay in shelters until the alarm goes off,” he said.
